15 If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,
that he may abide with you forever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
14:15, 16 – Jesus was soon going to leave the disciples, but he would remain with
them. How could this be? The Comforter – the Spirit of God himself – would come after
Jesus was gone to care for and guide the disciples. This happened to the disciples just
before his ascension (21:22), and to all the believers at Pentecost (Acts 2), shortly after
Jesus ascended to heaven. The Holy Spirit is the very presence of God within us and all
believers, helping us live as God wants and building Christ’s church on earth.
By faith we can appropriate his power each day.
